spring mega-post

Holly [promised][] some further birthday pictures, and I'm finally following through on that. Daphne had quite the exciting birthday, with balloons and presents and cake and, to provide a climax to the experience, a tornado.

[promised]: http://pinette.org/holly/2006/04/14/a_tornado_ate_my_birthday "frist ps0t on the b-day"

There was no tornado in the morning, though, when Daphne got some tremendously exciting red balloons (3 of them, natch):

Those weren't the only balloons in evidence, mind you; they were just the *red* ones. The others were picked to match the color scheme, which was based on a "springtime tea party" theme.

She made out, of course; aunts and uncles and grandmas and grandpas all contributed loot.

"O-*kay*, Daphne, I guess we can start opening these now!"

Since she's old enough that the unwrapping process has its own significance for her, she unwrapped everything first, and *then* went back to look at and play with the individual stuffses.

Not that she wasn't interested in playing. Indeed, the tea party commenced immediately.

Finally it was time for cake. [Recent successes][1] notwithstanding, we have a long history of making [ugly cakes][2] for birthdays. We elected to let a professional handle it this time.

[1]: http://pinette.org/jack/2006/03/26/orange_zebra_cake "mmmm... yummy"
[2]: http://pinette.org/holly/2004/04/05/cake_disaster "umm, not so yummy"

What a happy birthday girl!

----

I also wanted to post some Easter pictures. Daphne got double the party action this week.

Starting right when she woke up:

(we hid eggs inside, because it was cold and windy outside...)

Loot!

...and more loot! The big one is Daphne's. The small ones are for mommy and daddy and Aunt Nicolette and Uncle Greg, who were there to visit.

Aunt Nicolette fixed Daphne's hair up *very* prettily, which of course drove Daphne into a blue funk, because it was not the hairdo she usually gets. Daphne is not one for the graceful acceptance of change, no sir.

However, this was nothing that couldn't be fixed by yet another (!!?!) Easter present. This was when we all trucked over to Aunt Mauria and Uncle Bryon's house for Easter brunch.

Brunch!

Easter lilies!

Funny story: Holly bought Mauria this Easter lily; Mauria had bought the same thing from the same place on the same day for both Holly and Nicolette. I'm surprised we didn't bump into each other at the store.

And yes, Daphne eventually calmed down about the hair. S'cute, ain't it?

Happy Easter!

a dance of spring

This was the firstest bestest day for Daphne to go to the park, since it actually got up above 50 and was not raining. We followed our usual regimen of ball-chasing and rock-throwing and swinging and such.

Later, after Daphne decided to follow the walking path that rings the park, she located a large cache of dry leaves that had been caught in the vee formed by a chain link fence and a gate that had been left open at the same angle all winter. The day had turned blustery by this time, so that when Daphne grabbed an armload of leaves and flung them to the sky, they were snatched by the wind and plastered up against the chain link like wallpaper.

Soon we were both tossing every leaf we could lay hands on, watching them dash up against their comrades on the fence, which began to resemble the kind of sculptured shrub that faces the sidewalk in old neighborhoods.

We didn't stop there, though; we slathered the fence with a layer of leaves inches thick, up to the capacity of the wind to hold them in place, pausing only to draw the occasional swirl or curlicue with a finger. The surface of our unlikely canvas was alive with shifting, crackling leaf sculptures, pyramids and crescents and ziggurats forming and dissolving like a vertical field of sand dunes.

Daphne took breaks from construction to burrow peep-holes, which were duly enlarged to windows and a door. We played house for some time (or, more accurately, we played "going trick-or-treating at Daphne's house"), until the wind finally changed direction and turned our wall into a fence again.

Then we came home and played dance marathon.

I asked her who she was going to marry and she said, "A BEE!" She then let me know that I was was going to marry a butterfly and that Daddy was going to marry a duck.

two daphne conversations

Today, in the car:

DAPHNE: Oh -- I see a awful tower!

DADDY: Tower?

DAPHNE: It's a *awful* tower.

DADDY: I don't see a tower. Why's it awful?

DAPHNE: It's ok, it's like a triangle. It's got four red lights, one two three four.

DADDY: (*spotting a radio transmission tower with four red signal lights*) You mean *Eiffel* tower?

DAPHNE: Yeah! *Awful* tower.

----

Yesterday, in the car:

DAPHNE: (*pointing out a decorated house*) That's my Christmas house!

DADDY: *Your* house?

DAPHNE: Yeah. And that's Daddy's Christmas house, and Aunt Mauria's.

DADDY: Who else gets a Christmas house?

DAPHNE: Mommy!

DADDY: Where's Mommy's Christmas house?

DAPHNE: (*looking around, in a bewildered tone*) I don't know. I can't *find* it. Where'd it go?

(*a few minutes pass. Daphne spots a decorated house down a side street, which we are passing by*)

DAPHNE: Daddy, I want to go *that* way and see the Christmas house.

DADDY: Honey, we're going this way. We're going home.

DAPHNE: No! I'm too *scared*, it's too *scary*!

DADDY: Honey, there's nothing scary at all. Our house is just around the corner, see?

(*momentary silence*)

DAPHNE: (*quiet but emphatic; she means business*) No. *Don't* touch the Christmas.

DADDY: What?

DAPHNE: *Don't. Touch. The. Christmas.*

in st. louis, louis

For those who haven't seen it already, here's a (smallish) version of the St. Louis vacation video Holly put together.

For those who *have* seen it already: you've seen it already. In fact, you may even have a DVD with it on.

A couple of things about this online version:

- I am not very good at the whole video encoding thing; in order to make this both small and of reasonable quality, I had to use the newest video encoder I could find. Translation: you'd better have a very recent version of [Quicktime][] (or whatever your preference is for H.264/AAC playback).

- It is still not all that small (26MB), and is best suited for broadband connections rather than dial up.

[quicktime]: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ "Apple's video software"

Thanks for playing.

This is mostly what she does when we're not paying direct attention to her, which is almost never, because she REALLY wants us to pay attention to her. Attention must be paid! She cannot stand to have us do something that does not involve her. Personal grooming is becoming a problem, so if you see me shambling by with dishevelled hair and smelling like I've been a week without a bath, please understand it's because I can no longer close the bathroom door without triggering the apocalypse.

All of which is ameliorated handily by her being such a friggin' cutie.

She's doing lots of girlie stuff recently, like demanding to wear dresses (preferably with princesses on) and getting practically incandescent with excitement over the prospect of toddling around in her Mommy's boots. She is playing it cool in these pics, but I am here to tell you that it rocked her world.

One more for the road: she has started to tell a lot of jokes. Here was her joke today:

MOMMY: (*pointing to an item in a catalogue*) Daphne, isn't this cute?

DAPHNE: It's not cute, mommy. It's gyute.

MOMMY: It's what?

DAPHNE: Yah, it's gyut.

MOMMY: What are you doing?

DAPHNE: (*beginning to snicker*) Gooing.

*...later:*

DADDY: Daphne, is this a bee?

DAPHNE: No, it's a ghee! (*collapses in hysterics*)

DADDY: ... huh?

She went on like that half the night.

what she did for summer

Since we haven't dumped a big set of pics up here in a while, please enjoy this set of random stuff we did this summer.

Daphne's Grandma and Grandpa Pinette came out, along with her Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa Pinette (it was their first chance to meet Daphne face-to-face). I don't think Daphne understood the "great" business, but she sure did enjoy all the attention.

Daphne's Grandpa Winn came out to visit too. We tried to take Daphne out on her Uncle Bryon's boat, which she thought was an awesome idea, and she got to wear her super-cute life jacket that her Uncle Bryon and Aunt Mauria bought her for just such an occasion. However, actually being *on* the boat, with the life jacket *on*, was just a bit too much for her to handle emotionally. That turned out to be a really, really short sailing trip.

Luckily, there were plenty of pictures to draw, and rocks to toss in the water, so she was kept plenty busy as the sailing adventure resumed without her.

Last but not least, her Grandma Winn came out as well.

Man, what a lucky girl to be visited by so many people! True story: some union organizers (don't ask) dropped by the house to chat with me; I invited them in, they sat on the couch... and Daphne promptly presented them with a book and demanded that they read to her. Apparently the events of the summer taught her that anyone who enters the house is there for her entertainment.

Come to think of it, instead of telling Daphne that they weren't there to read *one fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish*, I should have just folded my arms and frowned in the union people's direction and waited to see what they would do. That would have been funnier.

One of our more recent trips was to the [fossil gorge][] at the Coralville reservoir (hey, there's a [brochure][]!). This is about five minutes from our house, so of course we've never got around to taking Daphne there before. She *loooooved* it, and would never have left if we had not forced the issue. She had found a rock formation seemingly designed for her amusement: a limestone shelf, with a 6-inch diameter hole in it, with standing water visible a couple of feet below, and an endless supply of pebbles to drop in one at a time for a satisfying "plop!"

Also, this is where you get to see how tall and skinny she is all of a sudden.

Daphne shopping for glasses (no, these aren't the ones we bought):

Daphne drawing on the sidewalk:

Daphne fleeing across the street to the park, the better to vent some of her excess energy reserves:

Daphne scaring the crap out of me (burning her arm has not taught her to be scared of things, which is both good and bad):

Daphne feeling glee:

Hope that tides you over 'til next time.
