News

What is new? Thanks for asking.

Well...I am still teaching 5th graders who are a lot different from 8th graders. So far it has been a good start to the year. We are going to start reading The Lightning Thief as a class. I am so glad that I work in a school district that allows me to choose the books I read with the class.

Daphne is slowly starting to like Kindergarten. Here in Iowa they call it kindy-garden. Do they call it that in Utah? I don't remember and it sounds very strange to me, so I think not.

Anyway, she is learning to like it and even though she would like to dominate the teacher's time with all of her questions and insights, she is learning to deal with the lack of attention. She now has 22 other kids to compete with as opposed to pre-school where she only had nine other kids to worry about.

We have had to start some discussions about race. She is suddenly aware of differences in skin color and we have had some pretty serious talks about language and feelings. It is an ongoing process, but one that is very important to us. It also makes for some interesting discussions with her about how we want Obama as our next president.

Finally, the most exciting family news is that Daphne is taking piano lessons. She loves it and we are happy that she has shown an such an interest in learning to play. She has a great teacher at the same place she used to take Kindermusik, so it wasn't scary for her at all.

We decided to put her in piano lessons instead of dance lessons because of her interest level. She may never take a dance class and I wonder if I will regret not having video evidence of her in a stupid dance recital costume that I can humiliate her with later in life. Ahhh well. There is still time.

Here is a picture of Daphne's stylish new haircut made possible by her aunt Nicolette. Doesn't she look older? And check out those shoes. You would never guess that this big girl sheds tears of fear over The Purple People Eater.

Growin' Up

Should I be upset that Daphne watched The American Mall twice? If you don't know what this is, imagine High School Musical set in a Mall. Yep, that stupid.

Gone are the days of Dora, Sesame Street, Wiggles, and Little Einsteins. She insists on looking like a teenager now. I am not sure what that means, but I am keeping her from MTV as long as I can.

Thank goodness she still worships those Disney Princesses and Fairies. But I am sad to say that you Care Bears and My Little Ponies may soon find yourselves at the bottom of the toy box.

Ahhh....she is growing up way too fast.

July Re-Cap

Here are the things I would have posted if there had been any time in July:

* Daphne rode the train for the very first time.

* It rained....and rained...and rained.

* I learned that all frogs are toads but not all toads are frogs. Oh, and that toads are stupid creatures who have a time share in my garage. Really, we had a toad invasion.

* I was in school full-time and didn't have time to do anything, nothing at all.

* Daphne prefers the Lion King 2 to the original. I think she is crazy.

* It takes $50 to fill my gas tank.

* Aprille has a cute baby....a baby that if she were to ask me is going to be one smart cookie....not unlike my own smart cookie. I could see it in his eyes. He was very aware of what was going on around him. A sure sign of intelligence.

* Daphne keeps letting her webkinz die. I have been spending more and more time online trying to keep the stupid things alive not to mention the stupid gardens. Why do I do this? I guess to remind me why I never let her get a dog.

* Daphne stuck a cotton ball up her nose. Yeuuck!

* Jack went to Memphis for a few days. Ya..that was sad. But, he did bring back chap-stick from Graceland.

* Daphne got in BIG trouble yesterday for hitting a girl at pre-school. She can be such a bully. Well...the little bully got sent to her room for the entire evening and wasn't allowed to do anything except read. She only got to read because I can't use reading as a punishment. I goes against my nature.

* I joined GoodReads. Join up and be my friend.

* Marie reads smarter books than I do. I hope she doesn't think I am dumb for reading vampire romance novels.

This is the last you will hear from me because I have to finish a paper tonight and then I have to prepare for BREAKING DAWN. Would it be creepy if I went to the release party? I will probably just wait until Saturday Morning. Although it is tempting to go all dressed up like Bella or something.

Sigh...this is the intelligent blogging you have been missing.

Dead Frog

This past weekend Jack and I spent an entire afternoon cleaning our garage. We swept, filled trash bags, and organized (by which I mean that we lined stuff against the walls).

It looked great and we were so proud of our work. Today when we drove up to our garage we saw a large blob with liquid coming out of it. Jack went to inspect and discovered a dead frog. We think that somehow it got in the garage and then we ran over it this morning on our way out. Yuck!

I told Jack that this fell under "Man's Work". I will stand by that. Scraping dead frogs off the floor of the garage and finding a place to dispose of the body is no work for a lady!!

Where Have I Been?????

I know that most of you have been anxious for me to resume my blogging now that it is summer and the horrors of school are over. By horrors I mean the lack of time that I have to do anything, not that I think of the kids as my little horrors. Although, there are some who might think of that as a compliment.

Anyway, we just got back from a trip through Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Nebraska and Iowa. We were on the road a lot and my rear end hurts. We saw big heads carved in rock, went to a place called Wall Drug that wasn't as cool as the fifteen million billboards told me it was going to be. We also saw the Corn Palace and it was a BIG disappointment. We stayed over in a very small town in Wyoming where I wouldn't have admitted that I did not vote for Bush lest someone kill me with their six-shooter.

We finished off the trip in Utah where Daphne got to spend lots of quality time with her grandparents. We will soon start the deprogramming because I don't want her to think that life is always going to include people who will actually answer her when she asks a question or feed her anything more nutritious than cereal.

Here is the photographic evidence:

And of course I was in Utah on Father's Day so I did not let the world know once again what an awesome Dad Jack is and how much Daphne and I love him. Proof of his supreme aswesomness is that he wore this tie ALL DAY. The tie that his daughter picked out all on her own for him because she just knew that was what she was supposed to give him.

Mother's Day

Can you believe it? I have been a Mom for five years. Soon my daughter is going to be a Kindergartner. She has already been to Kindergarten Round-up and will have her pre-school graduation at the end of May. My little baby!!

This morning I was honored by eating brunch at a local restaurant. It was nice. There was lots of fruit and waffles and those sorts of brunchy things. Very yummy.

Daphne insists that today I don't have to do any work. I wish that were true. I would love nothing more than to sit around reading books and watching old episodes of Law and Order. But, I have a research paper due and a presentation to give on Tuesday. There is no rest for this Mother.

The first change is that a month may go by and you may forget to put up the birthday pictures from a month ago.
Last Day of Four

Daphne is having a difficult day. I think she has some anxiety (I wonder where she gets that from?) about turning five. I know it sounds crazy, but she puts a lot of pressure on herself. I think she is worried that things will change enormously tomorrow. Like maybe that is the day she suddenly will sprout the horrible boobs that she "never never wants." Who can tell.

She has come a long way. She can read just about anything (even my college text books) and comprehend as much as her little brain with its background knowledge that only goes back a few years will let her. She wants so much to read her little picture books, but gets bored quickly. There was one Sunday that we checked out her body weight in books and she read them all by the middle of the week. We were left with nothing to read. THE HORROR!

After that I started insisting that she read "bigger and thicker books". You know, the ones without pictures on every page and very small type. So far it has worked out because we have found some fairy books and princess books for her to read. Oh, and the guys who started the Captain Underpants series. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

Last Friday I was in the car with my friend Abby (another teacher) when Daphne suddenly started to spell words. It was totally spontaneous. Abby looked at me and asked, "How long has she been doing that?" I replied with, "Just now!" I guess she has been storing up that little party trick for awhile.

Daphne also wows the crowds with her ability to count in three different languages and to add and subtract with the best of them.

What is she going to learn in Kindergarten? Who knows. She is going to be one big behavior problem. With all her smarts (she got those from her Dad) she has a temper like no other (well, maybe one other, go ahead and point that finger). So, her Dad's brains plus my personality. A combination only good for taking over a Third World Country.

We will just have to see how five works out. Maybe she will find the inner calm I have been looking for my whole life.

Oh, and I really, really love her and all that. Oh, and I think I was supposed to start this with , "FIVE YEAR AGO TODAY........".

So much for that.

Spring Break

I have been on Spring Break this week. It was my intention to post more this week, but I was a bit busy. Actually, I was sick and then I was busy. Is there anything worse than having a cold the first day of your vacation time? Well, yes there is and so I promise not to complain about it.

Last September Jack and I started planning a short trip to Chicago for our Spring Break. We were going to take Daphne to the Art Institute and to see a children's play. Let's just pretend like that happened because the truth is not as interesting. Jack did take some time off, but we spent it sleeping and doing house projects. We are such grown-ups.

Yesterday, I had to go to the Main University Library to do some research for an upcoming project I am working on for my class. Daphne and Jack came with me (you know for the fun of walking around a large room of archived journals and dissertations from the last 100 years). Here is Daphne (imagine her taller and about 13 years older) looking very collegiate:

Should I feel bad that while other kids are running around the mall or seeing Horton Hears a Who, my kid is spending her time learning the wonders of academic life? Do you think I am creating a SUPER-NERD? Is is bad that after visiting the University Library we went to the Java House for tea and hot chocolate? And is it even weirder that we all sat and read books? And is it even weirder that this all seems very normal to Daphne?

Some Thing She Says

Daphne is sick of the cold, snowy weather. So is everyone else. Believe me, there is not a person left in Iowa who would be writing romantic sentiments about how beautiful the snow is right now. She was very excited the other day when I was driving her home from preschool and she saw grass. Actual grass. Of course it isn't green yet, but brown grass is better than icky snow.

Daphne who is most certainly a future annoying student who knows all the answers. You know, the one who sits on the front row and corrects the teacher's spelling mistakes. Ya, that is her. I am tempted to let her smell the bleach in order to lower her IQ. (JUST KIDDING FOLKS)

Anyway, she woke up one morning this week and told me all about how the kids in school get in trouble for not using alliteration. Alliteration?? Yes. She told me that the kids at school don't know that Daphne Daisy Daffodil is alliteration. I asked her what her teacher thought of that and she said, "Oh, she doesn't want to know about that stuff." Ya, I bet she doesn't want a 4-year old schooling her on poetry terms.
