the melody, it’s mickle
Back to my sister’s high-school choir again, with I Saw a Maiden.
There’s a dark side to the holiday season, as anyone who has had the misfortune to visit Wal-Mart on Christmas Eve is keenly aware. And the story of Christmas is as disturbing as it is inspiring, if you look closely. So here’s a Christmas carol that never fails to raise my hackles and send a shiver up my spine: Coventry Carol.
Since yesterday was Latin/English, today can be Swedish/English. Enjoy: Nu Ar Det Jul Igen.
I came across a bunch of other online Christmas music whilst trying to find a good version of a particular song, and it seems selfish not to share, so here you go: For all your Arcade Fire, Sufjan, etc. needs. Excessively Eclectic Christmas From a collector with a wide range of tastes; everything from Johnny Mathis’s “Winter Wonderland” to Blood Sausage’s “F%%% Christmas, F%%% Santa, F%%% You”. Possibly the most annoying Christmas song ever, about a little girl who wants a hippopotamus. Long imprisoned below the sea, this song was loosed by a shadowy cult in an unspeakable ritual, and it is coming to eat your soul. Anyway, I ended up choosing the version of the song that I started out with — it’s a mixture of Latin and English, and I wanted the original Latin/German mashup, but all the ones I found were way too downtempo. So, enjoy: In Dulci Jubilo.
My favorite thing about Christmastime is easily the music. Holly enjoys the many stations that switch to round-the-clock Christmas-only playlists, and I like Christmas pop just fine. It can be a little repetetive, though, and those stations tend to pass over most of my favorites. For a dirty heathen, I sure am partial to devotional Christmas music, especially the old stuff. Anyway, as an antidote to the 1,000th rendition of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”, I’m going to try to post links to some Christmas songs I only wish I could hear on the radio. Those of you who count yourselves among the swingin’ techno-hipster set can point your favorite podcasting client at my combined feed for those sweet, sweet enclosures. The rest of you can just download the files if that’s your fancy, or simply click the little triangle to hear the song. To kick things off: my sister’s high-school a capella choir with All My Heart this Night Rejoices.shiver
